Founded by British-Nigerian artist and curator, Zina Saro-Wiwa, The Mangrove Arts Foundation uses food, art, research and storytelling to regenerate the environmentally-degraded Niger Delta, a region that is of global importance to the world’s oil economy but has seen scandalously little development.

The Mangrove Arts Foundation is dedicated to facilitating opportunities for artists, farmers, cooks, writers, small-scale entrepreneurs and historians to create powerful socially-engaged work, products and research in the Niger Delta. Through our arts and education-centred projects we will give back to the world: new art works, books, films, suppers, food products and a space to listen to the land. But also we aim to deliver a population better educated about its own history with a way of envisioning the future through art practises, education and agribusiness. Soil not oil.

This is a long-term, not-for-profit project modelling a new kind of engagement with damaged regions like the Niger Delta. It is an approach that does not patronise the people of the land. That does not tolerate the soft bigotry of low expectations. An approach that is prepared to listen and wait, ready to be surprised and transported. An approach that is holistic in its approach to repair and restitution.
